How this Scammer posing as Uber staff used Anydesk app to fraud of nearly 9 Lakh rupees | Read News

Bidhannagar cybercrime police have made a breakthrough in a case of lakhs of rupees fraud during an online cab complaint. The accused, Hajgul Ansari, was arrested from Jharkhand in connection with the incident.

The complaint was lodged by Deepak Kumar Saha, a resident of AH Block, Salt Lake, who reported an online cab fraud on January 28. Saha had booked an Uber cab on January 21, and after being presented with a bill of Rs 186, he contacted a person named Rahul Kumar Sharma through Google's customer care number. Sharma posed as an assistant manager from the cab company and promised to refund the entire amount. However, Saha was tricked into downloading the Anydesk app on his phone. Once Saha downloaded the Anydesk app, he granted Ansari remote access to his phone, unknowingly giving the fraudster control over his device. At this point, Saha was under the impression that the refund process was underway. However, while Saha believed he was being assisted with the refund, the scammer took advantage of the remote access to gain access to Saha's bank account or payment apps. Using this access, the fraudster executed unauthorized online transactions, resulting in the withdrawal of a substantial amount of Rs. 8,63,000.

Investigating the incident, the police traced the call to a Jharkhand area. A team from Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police raided Paljhari village in Jharkhand, where they arrested the main accused, Hajgul Ansari. He has since been brought to Kolkata on transit remand from Jharkhand to face charges.

The successful arrest of the accused is a significant step towards curbing cybercrimes and protecting citizens from fraudulent activities. The Bidhannagar cybercrime police continue to remain vigilant in their efforts to safeguard the public from such online scams.
